Make sure communities have a say on new mining laws.
I am writing to you as my local member of parliament about an issue of great importance to me, and our whole community. The Victorian government’s proposed Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Amendment Bill 2023 will lock communities out of having a say on mining in our own backyard. It’s set to reduce government oversight of the mining industry, scrap transparency requirements for mining operators and let operators self-assess the risks of their mining projects. As Victoria prepares for a surge in mining proposals from companies seeking to profit from a critical minerals boom, de-regulating the mining industry is the last thing our government should be doing. We know mining can have serious consequences on our climate, contribute to health problems for our communities, and poison our air and water. The government has a responsibility to protect communities and our environment by properly regulating the mining industry. As new mining projects are proposed across Victoria, will you make sure mining companies are accountable to local communities? Recognising the community interest in thorough, transparent mining regulations, the government has consulted widely with communities on draft mining legislation and regulations over the past two years, but this Bill was not subjected to public scrutiny and feedback. Victorians deserve a chance to review the Bill and decide whether they support the government stripping back oversight and transparency requirements for mining companies. Will you stand up for our community by committing to the following two actions? Ask the Victorian Minister for Climate Action, Energy and Resources and the State Electricity Commission, the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP, to commit to a thorough public consultation before progressing this Bill Withhold your support for the Bill until the community is given an opportunity to provide feedback, through a public consultation process. As my local representative, I appreciate you hearing my concerns and responding with your commitment to raise this with the Resources Minister, the Hon. Lily D’Ambrosio MP, and withhold support from the Bill. Thank you for standing up for the rights of communities to hold mining companies to account.
