Public money for renewables, not Eraring
I am concerned to hear the NSW government is considering extending Eraring power station’s closure date, and paying up to $400 million per year to Eraring's owners in order to do so – public money that would be much better spent on the renewable energy transition. Extending Eraring’s closure date will lock local communities into even more toxic air pollution, which is already having devastating health consequences. It’ll also mean the threat to Lake Macquarie from Eraring’s toxic coal ash dumps – which store the toxic byproduct of burning coal – will continue to grow. Renewables and storage are the answer to reliable and affordable energy – not propping up coal, which is dirty, dangerous and on its last legs. I urge you to consider the advice of independent energy experts such as Stephanie Bashir of Nexa Advisory and Tim Buckley of Clean Energy Finance that energy security can instead be met through investment in a combination of household and large scale clean energy projects – and that this approach would lead to lower energy bills in NSW. Communities living near Eraring have been speaking out about the serious health and environmental impacts of coal pollution for years. Just last week, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Toxics and Human Rights visited Lake Macquarie to hear from community members about the impacts of toxic coal pollution on their air, land and waterways – and the devastating burden of chronic illness they face. Breathing polluted air is giving our kids asthma. It can make babies underweight, and leads to strokes, heart attacks and lung cancer. As my local representative, will you call for public funds to be spent on clean, affordable and renewable energy, rather than to prolong polluting coal by extending Eraring’s closure date?
